PUSONG PINOY AT THE 2014 PRESTWICK CHRISTMAS FAYRE IN SCOTLAND

The Prestwick, Scotland, Christmas Light lighting-up “Fayre” has grown in popularity over the past couple of years. On Sunday, 30th of November, thousands of people flocked to the town for the event. It culminates in the street Christmas Lights and Christmas tree “switch-on”.

Pusong Pinoy joined in the festivities for the second year running.  It was an ideal opportunity to promote our cause and raise funds to support the shipment of our donations to our Pusong Pinoy recipients.
Special thanks to the CO-OP SUPERMARKET in Prestwick, Scotland, for its generous donation of minced pies (36x6 boxes).  These tasty minced fruit, spiced pies are a traditional Christmas treat.  This is the second year that the store has donated mince pies. The pies were given to people for a small donation to Pusong Pinoy during the event.

Thank you to Pusong Pinoy Heroes PAULA NIMMO and  STEWARD McMURRAN, for helping us during this event.  Thanks to JOAN DECECCO for donating costume jewelry and to MARY DEVLIN for baking biscuits for us to sell.

Special thanks to the ROTARY CLUB OF PRESTWICK and “BUZZWORKS” and all of the people who helped with the organization of the event.   Finally, thank you to all of the donors who supported our stall and the event.  We truly appreciate it.

Together, let's collect tsinelas (slippers) this Christmas so that 2,000 children would not have to go barefoot and to make sure that each kid have a brand new pair of slippers this Christmas.

We are also hoping to raise funds towards the purchase of food items to 300 disadvantaged families in Batangas so that they may have a MERRY CHRISTMAS this year.

PP HERO PAT KEDSLIE'S
BIRTHDAY BLOWOUT AT LITTLE LIGHTS

PAT KEDSLIE of Newton Mearns in Scotland, celebrated her birthday the Pusong Pinoy way! It was such a great day as 100 children from the Little Lights Ministry in Pasig gathered for an afternoon of fun, games, storytelling and treats.

Pastor Joseph Casaje and his wife, Sister Jeanette of Little Lights, along with volunteers organized Pat's birthday celebration at the Rovihas Covered Court, Tramo St., Barangay Rosario, Pasig City. Our very own PP Team Leaders Douglas Inness, Florence Temporal and Marty Goitia also joined and helped in the celebration. Rey Bufi and Mary Grace Soriano of The Storytelling Project also attended the event for an interactive storytelling and warm-up fun.

The party started with fun songs organized by master storyteller, Rey Bufi, followed by an interactive story.  It was a wonderful activity which kept the children enthralled as it unfolded. The children had so much fun - singing, listening and laughing.  They also played games.  Happy faces all around. The egg and spoon race proved to be popular.  The children had an opportunity to thank Pat by signing her birthday banner.  They were also treated with delicious meal - spaghetti, chicken kebab, cake, donuts, juice and treats. It was a fun-packed day for children and adults alike.

We are truly grateful to Pat for celebrating her birthday with the children from Little Lights.  Thanks to Little Lights and The Storytelling Project for their untiring efforts to make Pat's birthday blowout  a success.  Such an event only works with teamwork and commitment.

If you would like to celebrate your birthday the Pusong Pinoy way, bringing smiles to children as they share your celebration, please email us at pusongpinoyorg@gmail.com.

ABOUT LITTLE LIGHTS
Little Lights Ministry planted its humble beginnings in February 2010, at Sitio Tawi-Tawi along the riverbanks of the Pasig-Cainta boundary where drug dealing, drinking sprees, gambling, and street brawls are a way of life. Out of this concern, Little Lights was born. As the ministry continued its mission, they came across out-of-school and never-schooled children, which led them to start "Learning Lessons," a progressive Montessori-type learning system for ages 2 to 15 years.

Little Lights currently serves more than 1,000 underprivileged Filipino children and their love ones to have a better way of life.  Deeply inspired and motivated by the works of Little Lights Ministry, Pusong Pinoy has been sponsoring their feeding and learning program since 2010.

SAINT NINIAN PRIMARY SCHOOL DONATED
1,330 BOOKS TO PUSONG PINOY

Earlier this year, St. Ninian's Primary school in Prestwick, Scotland, donated over 1,300 gently-used children's books to Pusong Pinoy.

The students sorted and graded the books. Ripped, old and torn books were rejected and sent for recycling. Then, books were boxed and labeled for shipment to the Philippines.  Thank you to the staff and students for supporting this project and volunteering to help.

A week later, Pusong Pinoy was invited to speak at a whole-school assembly about the work we do to promote literacy in the Philippines. The result of all this work was 12 boxes of nice books. The books are now on their way to the Philippines, where they will be distributed to Pusong Pinoy recipients.

PUSONG PINOY AT PRESTWICK PROM CELEBRATIONS (SCOTLAND)

In early June, Pusong Pinoy was represented at the Prestwick Prom Celebration event. This is a great opportunity to inform people of what we do and to raise some funds. It was a damp day but this did not dampen our spirits. We had fun! The response to Pusong Pinoy was universally positive.

Thanks to our Scotland Team Leader DOUGLAS INNESS and PP volunteers AGNES DONES, PAULA NIMMO, STEWART McMURRAN and IAN McMURRAN for their invaluable support.  Big thanks to all the HEROES who donated books, supported us on the day and made our stall a possibility!

PP'S 2014 FOOD DRIVE RECIPIENT-
DUEG RESETTLEMENT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

As Pusong Pinoy launched its 2014 FOOD FOR THOUGHT Food Drive, here's a closer look at the recipients of this project.

DUEG RESETTLEMENT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, one of the recipients of our 2014 Food Drive, is located in Sitio Dueg in Barangay Maasin, San Clemente, Tarlac in the Philippines.  It is hundreds of feet above sea level and is adjacent to the mountains of Zambales.  It is the resettlement area for the Aeta community affected by the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo in the early 90s.  There are currently over 400 settlers in the area.

The closest school in the community is located at the foot of the mountain.   Due to the very rough terrain with steep curves, mud and rocks, the only means of transportation to get to the school is by a passenger "dump truck".  As the community grew over the years, the Department of Education (DepEd) built a school to cater to the growing population of the children in the community which is now known as the Dueg Resettlement Elementary School.

The school is led by a very passionate principal, Mrs. Claudia Toledo. She has a pool of dedicated teachers who contribute 100 pesos a week from their meager salaries to cook porridge for the students to motivate them to attend the school.  The teachers sleep at the school during the week and only see their families on the weekends, because traveling to their homes at the foot of the mountain can only be done once a week.  There is no electricity or other form of comfort or entertainment at the school.

The Aeta children live very poor lives. Although they are used to this kind of living as passed down by older generations, it is a pity that they do not even have the comforts experienced by poor children in the lowlands. They sometimes eat only once a day.  The children sometimes come to school with a packed lunch of rice and siling labuyo (wild chili) or ginger. These children do not even know how some food items taste. It is no surprise that many of them are considered malnourished by the DepEd.  Ultimately, children who come to school hungry or are chronically hungry will not perform well in school.

For our 2014 Food Drive, we are asking donations towards the purchase of  RICE and POWDERED MILK.  The Aeta children rarely drink milk.  It is a rare luxury in the community.  On March 22, 2014, Pusong Pinoy will once again go to the community to bring food items from this food drive and pairs of slippers from our Project Tsinelas.  A feeding event is also planned during the turnover.

If you would like to be a part of our 2014 Food Drive, please email us at info@pusongpinoy.org.  To make a donation, please click on the Donate button below. Thanks in advance!
